How to Use Data Size Converter

A quick step-by-step guide for converting storage values with the exact controls on the tool page.

Back to Data Size Converter

Use this guide when you need to compare bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, petabytes, or exabytes and want to avoid mixing binary storage math with decimal marketing sizes.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Enter a number in the Value field

Type the size you want to convert into the Value input. The tool accepts whole numbers and decimals such as 512, 1.5, or 2048.

2

Choose the source unit from From unit

Open the From unit dropdown and select the unit your number already represents, from Bytes through Exabytes.

3

Set the Sizing system

Choose Binary when you need 1,024-byte steps for storage calculations, or Decimal when you need 1,000-byte steps for SI sizing and vendor-style capacity figures.

4

Click Convert size

The Conversion results section will open and show the full table for Bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB, PB, and EB, with the source row highlighted.

5

Copy or reset as needed

Use Copy results to copy the current table, or Reset to clear the form and start again with a new value.

Pro Tips

  • Use the quick example buttons to test common storage values fast.
  • Turn on scientific notation when comparing very small converted values.
  • If a drive label and OS reading do not match, compare the same number in both binary and decimal modes.
